Winterlight

After absorbing post-punk and shoegaze in the 80s and 90s in his native Thames Valley England, Tim Ingham took time to let those influences soak in and it wasn't until 2006 in an effort to recreate the lush and hazy sounds of his youth that Winterlight came to be. Quickly coming to the attention of other acts on the ambient/electronica scene, he remixed a number of his contemporaries, including n5MD's own port-royal. Two singles, Mirror and Kissed, on UK label Years Without Art, demonstrated his ability to craft his own simple dream-pop melodies in the vein of contemporaries like Ulrich Schnauss and veterans like Robin Guthrie. An album, 'Summer Interlude' was released under the name Lightsway (2008 Distant Noise) that further explored Ingham's signature blurred sound where happiness and sadness are indistinguishable. His first album for n5MD, 'Hope Dies Last' (2011), which was subsequently Echoes album of the month, showcased lush, multi-layered productions that evoked a 'melancholy euphoria', as Ingham describes it. Whilst maintaining his initial love of simplicity and repetition in melodic structure, the music had evolved into something more complex as layers of lush instrumentation blurred together to create Ingham's own reverb-drenched wall of sound. A period of hiatus followed; punctuated by occasional Soundcloud demos, live performances, and rumors of activity that led nowhere. In the Winter of 2016 Winterlight Expanded into a duo for a live performance, with Ingham's daughter Isabel picking up bass guitar duties. This performance and working with a familiar new bandmate kick-started Ingham's creativity and the promised recordings finally began.
